The federated search engine

A single tool to search many databases

The federated search engine offers a simple tool you can use to simultaneously or individually query multiple databases available on the websites of Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ), Library and Archives Canada (LAC) and other sites.

An effective query language

The federated search engine has an effective query language based on numerous metadata elements (family name, given name, etc.). This makes it easy for you to design elaborate searches in order to find relevant information in all of the sources queried. However, the effectiveness of the federated search engine is closely dependent on the characteristics of each database's search engine.

Identify results in the blink of an eye!

The federated search engine transforms long lists of results into organized information that can be readily put to use:

Assessment of relevance
It quickly analyses the relevance of results and ranks them independently of the scores attributed by the sources of information.
Emphasis of terms
It automatically emphasizes keywords in the results list to improve the analysis of relevance.
Previews of documents
It dynamically extracts key sentences from documents to create intelligent snapshots.

  Tips:
  • When you enter terms separated by a space, the federated search engine interprets these terms as linked by the Boolean operator AND. For example, if you enter John Smith, the federated search engine will search for documents containing the terms John and Smith.
  • Once the results are displayed, click on Refresh in the cluster zone to update the list.
  • Careful!
To display the results by relevance, click on Score after doing your search.

Export data

The results found by the federated search engine can easily be exported in various formats to any type of application or database.
